sip go for a boogie with a new band

Posted by gen on Nov 09 2009 | SIP

Last Friday Kate, aka Mrs sip, had a spare ticket to a band called The Airborne Toxic Event at the Shepherds Bush Empire around the corner from our little office. We decided after a long week of label design (news coming soon…!) we deserved a night out so after few Mojitos at a nearby Brazilian bar we headed over to the gig. Kate was already a fan but as i’d not heard their stuff (and am not a cool enough regular ‘gig’ goer) so was unsure as to how I would fake my excitement for over an hour if I didnt like it…perhaps a cider or two would help…and maybe I could flap my arms around erratically to show my appreciation?!

We found our seats up at the top level which had a surprisingly great view - the joy of smaller venues! I was still a little nervous about how I would manage to stay standing for an hour let alone bopping along to a band I’d never heard of…

We sat down with a bottle of water and a cup of cider - perfect gig watching supplies, and the next thing I knew it had been an hour and half! No faking it needed as I totally loved them, they were fun, friendly and genuinely loved what they were doing. I was mesmerised  by the chick in the band who played the violin every now and then as well as brilliantly stomping around the stage with a tamborine, singing and playing the keyboard - impressive stuff!

a little pic of the band!

My favourite songs were Sometime Around Midnight and Gasoline which you can see here courtesy of lovely youtube:

I def recommend you check them out and next time someone asks you to try something you’ve never done before, like going to a gig (or trying sip for the first time perhaps?) ive realised its all about being open to having fun and doing it with a smile on your face. I’m looking forward to trying more new things and reporting back on my adventures!

As always, sip happy x

sip loves… OPI matte nail polish!

Posted by gen on Oct 06 2009 | SIP, beauty

The matte nail polish trend has been been getting bigger and bigger so when the wonderful OPI team came out with a new matte range we were very excited. They have 6 different colours to choose from and rather than creating new colours they have converted their top selling colours into a matte variant. The matte colours can be used as is, or you can double it up with the same colour in a non matte shiny variant to intensify the result.

OPI and www.alllacqueredup.com have some tips if you are going to try the full on matte;

  • firstly, do not use a basecoat or topcoat when using the polish
  • only paint dry nails (so no lotions before hand)
  • try doing two coats for a solid matte look
  • be smooth since a matte result can show the ridges from the brush
  • be aware that since it wont have the base or topcoat it can chip a lot easier

- it may sound a little more high maintenance but the results can look fantastic!

since we love sip (obviously!) here in the office we found a firm favourite in the Gargantuan Green Grape variant (below) which looked great as we sipped our Elderflower sip!

get yourself a little bit of yasmin le bon at Wallis

Posted by sipdrinkblog on Sep 29 2009 | Fashion, SIP

We here at sip have always adored Yasmin Le Bon and the Le Bons overall - we even followed her daughter Amber (one of three of her gorgeous daughters) as she was tweeting live backstage as a model at London Fashion Week this year, and whenever we’ve met Yasmin (see below with sip!)…

…she has always been wonderfully turned out and gets more and more achingly beautiful each time we see her! When we heard about her line with Wallis we knew it would ooze everything that makes Yasmin so wonderful - and we were right; mature and chic yet still maintaining an edgy rock & roll feel. Her line features long lean gowns, chic high-neck blouses and a striking vintage-feel jewellery collection that really stands out on the high street at the moment.

In the Guardian interview she explained; “I’m obsessed with high-neck things. You’re covered up but it’s sexy, and I’ve always loved long dresses. Covering up can be a lot sexier than being uncovered. My body has changed, so feeling comfortable and confident, while accentuating the bits that are OK, is important.”

She also admitted that she was finding the transition from model to designer daunting but we think the collection is perfect for the modern woman and she looks better than ever modelling it.

Catwalk Diaries: Richard Nicoll

Posted by sipdrinkblog on Sep 22 2009 | SIP

As promised you can now check out some of my pics from the Richard Nicoll S/S 2010 catwalk show here:

I got tickets to the fantastic show courtesy of the Independent in association with Blackberry and Carphone Warehouse.

Not only was I greeted with lovely food and drinks each of the winners were given the new Blackberry Curve 8520 in Violet (available exclusively from the Carphone Warehouse on Orange)

The show was packed - and for good reason too, in Spring-Summer 2005, Richard Nicoll showed his first collection as part of the Fashion East sponsorship project during London Fashion Week. Since then, the British-born, Australian-raised designer has gone from strength to strength and is now considered one of London’s most highly-anticipated and talented young designers. When asked what kind of woman hey designs for Nicoll says he is designing for an ‘individual woman who doesn’t follow trends, somebody who is idiosyncratic and slightly eccentric but within the constraints of normal society.’

He used Beach Boys-influenced electronic music, a bit by Animal Collective and then some 60s Garage Rock at the end of the show and received a hugely deserved round of applause and standing ovation as he walked out onto the catwalk at the end of the show. All in all it was a fantastic evening and Nicoll did not disappoint!

You can buy Richard Nicoll from Browns, Net A Porter, Yoox and Polyvore.
